"Benitez is a highly concentrated performer, with the focused emotional movements of a dancer. His speeches are magnetizing, his silences-explosive. He whispers “Urbe” (metropolis.) He holds up a cardboard banner that says “Urbe”, then another writ larger, a third, the visual equivalent of a shout (a trick from silent film inter-titles.) Benitez manipulates the jagged city set, moving the sections in and out with the fierceness of a biblical God, his intensity matching the rhythmical post-tonal wit of Silvestre’s demanding beautiful score. The rapt audience leapt to their feet in a standing ovation."
